Jon Anderson je pevač svilenog glasa po kome je prepoznatljiva svaka pesma koju je snimila grupa Yes. Ujedno, on je i autor tekstova i tu nastaje moj glavni nesporazum sa njim – često nisam uspevao da razlučim o čemu on to peva, a stihovi koje je ubacivao u pesme ponekad nisu imali nikakvog smisla i navodili su me na sumnju da uzima neke halucinogene supstance…

Ne bi bio ni prvi ni poslednji takav u svetu rock & rolla.

Pre dvadesetak godina, Rick Wakeman je malo objasnio stvari. Dok je ostatak grupe razrađivao muzičke ideje u studiju, Anderson je tumarao okolo i poluglasno, poput šamana, pevušio za sebe. A onda su svi zajedno sklapali finalnu verziju.

Kada su Yes, na vrhuncu slave, prdnuli u čabar megalomanskim promašajem Tales from an Topographic Ocean (1973), nezadovoljni Wakeman je dao ostavku, a grupa se dala u poteru za njegovom zamenom. Poslali su Andersona u Pariz da vrbuje Vangelisa, a on je kasnije rado prepričavao prvi susret sa njim – nije bio ni malo impresioniran time što mu je na noge došao pevač grupe Yes.

Uprkos tome, među njima se razvilo neobično prijateljstvo. Vangelis je izdržao dvonedeljne probe sa grupom i vratio se kući. Verovatno je shvatio da grupa funkcioniše kao firma, da su manje bitne inspiracija i kreacija, već krajnji rezultat u vidu proizvoda koji će se prodavati. Uostalom, posle zlatne prve polovine sedamdesetih, Yes su se pretvorili u jalovo društvance koje je samo na trenutak znalo da bljesne.

The Friends of Mr CairoSolo albumima i kolaboracijama sa Vangelisom, Anderson se pokazao kao muzičar koji ipak ima malo širu viziju od svojih kolega. I, što je još interesantnije, kao čovek koji je u stanju da zaboravi na zvezde i šarene veverice koje mu igraju pred očima i da napiše pesme koje imaju početak, sredinu i kraj. A u današnjoj pesmi, koja dolazi sa albuma The Friends of Mr Cairo (1981), pretvorio se u pravog storytellera.

Naslovna pesma “The Friends of Mr. Cairo” je, kako Anderson reče, posveta starim krimićima iz tridesetih i četrdesetih godina. Dok je smišljao tekst imao je utisak kao da se pretvorio u Douglasa Fairbanksa i osetio atmosferu u njima, a asocijacije na Jamesa Cagneya i Humphreyja Bogarta su se podrazumevale. U glavi je odmotavao Malteškog sokola u kome je Peter Lorre Mr. Cairo, Sidney Greenstreet je bio The Fat Man, a Bogart detektiv Sam Spade… Uostalom, sve stare glumačke legende mogu da se vide u dužoj verziji klipa.
